The Durban Virginia Airshow captivated record-breaking crowds at the Virginia Airport in Durban North last Saturday.
Spectators were treated to a dazzling array of aerial stunts and breathtaking displays that highlighted the skill and precision of some of South Africa’s finest pilots.
The solo aerobatic performances were a major highlight, with award-winning pilot Nigel Hopkins wowing the audience in his fully branded Standard Bank Extra aircraft.
Aerobatic teams took the excitement even further, demonstrating their mastery of precision flying with death-defying stunts such as the switchblade and knife edge manoeuvres.
The airshow also featured a range of vintage aircraft, radio-controlled planes, and helicopter demonstrations.
The highlight of the day was the South African Air Force (SAAF) display, featuring two BK-117 helicopters performing a perfectly synchronised aerial ballet.
Umhlanga Tourism chairperson, Jeannie Sarno, praised the airshow’s contribution to the community. “This event has become a highlight for the residents of the Dolphin Coast. Not only does it entertain locals, but it also draws visitors to our region and showcases the attractions of Durban and the eThekwini municipality. The overwhelming turnout and positive response from the public have made this an unmissable annual event on the KwaZulu-Natal calendar,” she said.
The Durban Virginia Airshow also aims to inspire the next generation. Held on the Friday before the airshow, the Aviation Career Day, introduced hundreds of pupils to the aviation industry. Pupils had the opportunity to explore career paths in the air force, commercial aviation, air traffic control, and tourism. They even met the pilots performing in the airshow, offering a unique behind-the-scenes experience that sparked enthusiasm for the world of aviation.
