After three years, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has reopened the full walkway trail and estuary bridge in uMhlanga, north of Durban.
The reserve was closed due to a toxic chemical spill and repairs that needed to take place.
During the July 2021 unrest, the UPL South Africa warehouse in Cornubia was set alight, which led to a toxic chemical spill. The closure of the reserve also led to a 1km exclusion zone (the beach area) around the Ohlanga River and uMhlanga estuary mouth.
In a statement by the Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) they said the trail bridge over the uMhlanga estuary, which had previously fallen within the estuary exclusion zone, has been repaired and stabilised by the UIP, contracted engineers, and Buzz Bolton. The exclusion zone has now been reduced to 150 meters on either side of the open river mouth, making the full trail accessible for walking and running.
“As part of our efforts to conserve the wildlife now frequenting the area, all dogs must be kept on a leash at the estuary. This measure helps protect the delicate ecosystem and ensures that both wildlife and visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of uMhlanga,” UIP said.
People are requested to take advantage of the newly reopened trail. Enjoy a leisurely walk or run along the promenade and trails, taking in the coastal scenery. There is also the Forest Café for a refreshing coffee break.
“We are delighted to see the trail fully operational again and encourage everyone to make the most of this wonderful outdoor experience,” UIP said.
The reserve is open from 6am to 6pm from the boardwalk section and from 7am until 3.30pm in the car-park section at Lagoon Drive.
