King unveils Shaka Zulu statue at airport

A momentous tribute to South Africa’s cultural heritage was paid when reigning King Misizulu kaZwelithini unveiled a statue of the legendary King Shaka Zulu at Durban’s King Shaka International Airport.

The statue, honouring King Shaka’s legacy, stands prominently at the airport entrance, representing the unity and strength of the Zulu nation and the broader African continent. Key figures gathered at the unveiling, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, ministers, and cultural leaders.

King Misizulu, speaking with deep pride, said the statue was a lasting homage to both King Shaka and his own father, the late King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu. He said that its placement at one of South Africa’s busiest airports transformed the monument into a powerful cultural statement for all who passed through.

“This statue represents not only our history but our pride,” King Misizulu said. “It is a reminder of King Shaka’s strength and leadership, that continues to inspire the Zulu nation and all of Africa.”

President Ramaphosa echoed the sentiment, saying the statue was a step forward in the nation’s efforts to honour its heritage and cultivate unity.

“King Shaka’s legacy continues to inspire not only the Zulu people but all South Africans,” President Ramaphosa said.

“It’s a testament of unity in our history and a symbol of our pride as a nation,” said the president.

Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli praised the statue’s potential impact on tourism and economic growth in KwaZulu-Natal, saying he hoped that it would serve as an invitation for visitors to explore the rich history and heritage of the Zulu people.
