A 27-year-old South African Police Service (SAPS) constable, arrested in Cato Manor during an early morning operation on October 4, has been cleared of any involvement in the tragic hijacking that led to the death of 11-year-old Zarah Ramsamy in Malvern last month.
KwaZulu-Natal police moved swiftly to address media reports linking the officer to the incident, confirming that while the constable was arrested for possession of a stolen bank card, he is not connected to the hijacking or the young girl’s death.
Addressing the media, police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda expressed concern over reports linking the arrested officer to the incident.
“While it is true that a police constable has been taken into custody, it is important to set the record straight — this officer is not involved in the hijacking or the murder,” Colonel Netshiunda said.
The officer’s arrest was due to his alleged possession of a bank card belonging to the owner of the vehicle hijacked during the Malvern incident on September 11. However, Colonel Netshiunda emphasised that at the time of the hijacking, the constable was on duty in Cato Manor, where he is stationed.
The incident occurred when Zarah Ramsamy was hiding under her mother’s vehicle during the hijacking. The hijackers drove over her while fleeing, resulting in the young girl’s death. The vehicle, a Toyota Fortuner, was later recovered after being abandoned.
Further investigations revealed that the arrested officer was allegedly in possession of other suspicious items, including additional stolen bank cards, cellphones, and number plates.
Colonel Boysie Zungu, Metro Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and commended the law enforcement agencies involved. “This was a job well done by all the officers and security personnel. Their dedication to justice and the safety of our community is commendable.”
The overnight operation was a coordinated effort involving SAPS, Durban Metro Police Special Operations Directorate, Fidelity Special Investigations Unit, Hawks Protection Services, and Magma Security and Investigations.
The investigation into the hijacking and murder continues, with authorities determined to bring all those responsible to justice.
The officer is expected to appear in court soon.
